Frequently Asked Questions

NON-MEMBERS---> APBR web sites receive in excess of 10 million hits each month. With this enormous response comes enormous administrative responsibilities and costs. Because of this we CANNOT guarantee a response to a non-member. A guaranteed response is a benefit we provide exclusively to our members. When opportunity permits however we do try to answer individual questions. For the most part questions are generic in nature and fall within categories or groups of similar questions. Chances are if you have a question others have also had similar thoughts and questions. Some of these general questions are provided below with general answers. If you need a more personal response we request you help us support you and others in the PitBull community like yourself and sign up as a member where you too will receive member correspondence benefits.

For general discussion and networking opportunities with other PitBull enthusiasts you are also encouraged to join our PitBullSocial network. This community service is FREE to all PitBull enthusiasts and provides extra benefits and services for those who are APBR members.

1. Can you register my PitBull if I do not know the parents?

Yes. We understand that such information is often not available for many PitBulls due to reasons beyond the control of the PitBulls owner. Lacking this information does not mean your PitBull isn’t a verifiable PitBull! We believe that ALL pure bred PitBulls have the right to be registered. This is where the American PitBull Registry ( APBR ) differs from other registries. Most registries will not allow Pits to be papered through their entity if there isn’t a long genealogical history behind the dog. However, what they don’t realize is that by not allowing a PitBull into the registration process, this often promotes a sense of less value toward the breed and even perpetuates a "throw away" mentality toward it. We believe all pure bred PitBulls have the right to be registered regardless of proven genealogical histories.

2.What is required for me to register my PitBull?

 There is one major thing.

  • It is a pure bred American PitBull Terrier. If this is questionable please do not attempt to register your dog as doing so you are providing your word it is a pure bred American PitBull Terrier (APBT). *PitBulls represented in the AKC or other registry as American Staffordshire Terriers are in fact one in the same as an American PitBull Terrier. The Am Staff stock is 100% American PitBull Terrier ( APBT ) as historically documented and can be registered with the APBR.

There are three simple things we will need from you:

a.) A front and side view photograph of your PitBull. Your pictures should be of good size and quality for us to make a fair assessment as to its purity. Follow this link to preview what a picture should resemble: Picture Preview. Pictures located on your computer can be uploaded if using the Online Registration to submit or if sending registration by mail may be included with your material. All hard copy pictures sent by mail are returned with Registration Material as a matter of courtesy.

b.) Your Registration Form sent online or by mail. Forms can be printed for offline use or you may use the Online Registration process that will provide you a final Online Confirmation that can be used to print off, sign and mail in. You may use this link to go to the appropriate section: How to register and get papers on my PitBull. Alternatively you may also choose the FAST TRACK online registration service where everything can be done online including providing the necessary registration form, pictures and payment.

A registration packet may also be requested by mail by written request sent to us with a $1.00 self addressed envelope included with your request. With this we will send you a general registration packet.

No printer? No problem! You may submit your forms, pictures and payment all online.

c.) Your payment: This can be made by the following 6 methods.

  • Money Order - This is generally the option of choice when paying by mail for submitting dues. Paper checks will be accepted on a case-by-case basis but their use may also slow the registration process by up to 4 additional weeks. Paper checks are extremely expensive from an administrative standpoint and better options are available. If considering paying by check please use the online check/debit card option we provide. This is a service provided by PayPal, which the Internet's largest and most secure payment option service provider. PayPal is owned and backed by the mighty online behemoth eBay. Any paper checks submitted and returned by your bank are subject to a $25 processing fee.
  • Cash - Although there is greater risk in sending cash by mail if you feel comfortable in sending payment in this way it will be accepted.
  • Online Debit Card - Using the online registration option you may use this to pay all associated dues. This is a service provided by PayPal, which the Internet's largest and most secure payment option service provider. PayPal is owned and backed by the mighty online behemoth eBay.
  • Online Credit Card - Using the online registration option you may use this to pay all associated dues. This is a service provided by PayPal, which the Internet's largest and most secure payment option service provider. PayPal is owned and backed by the mighty online behemoth eBay.
  • Online Check - Using the online registration option you may use this to pay all associated dues. This is a service provided by PayPal, which the Internet's largest and most secure payment option service provider. PayPal is owned and backed by the mighty online behemoth eBay.
  • PayPal - Using the online registration option you may use this to pay all associated dues. This is a service provided by PayPal, which the Internet's largest and most secure payment option service provider. PayPal is owned and backed by the mighty online behemoth eBay.

Failure to remit appropriate dues will cause significant delays in registration material production. Due to the significant administrative time invested in the development of a member's material, material registration services DO NOT BEGIN until ALL proper registration requirements are met. If you have failed to meet these please do not contact us asking where your material is at as we are still waiting on you.

3.What if I do not have all the information requested on the Registration Form?

On the Registration Form the only required parts to be filled out are those denoted by asterisks. If additional information is known on the PitBull please feel free to include this. Any additional genealogical information and pictures are also greatly appreciated. This additional information will be used for tracking purposes and to enhance the Registration Material of the PitBull being registered. If you have any pictures of other family members of your Pit and would like these included through your free personalized Family Profile Disc and PitBull Family Profile we would be happy to incorporate these as well. Feel free to print copies of our forms through our Web site and make copies as needed for use or distribution. If you do not have a printer you may also submit your form online as an alternative.

4.What options do I have in order to send pictures?

If you are submitting your registration online you will have the option of either completing a picture upload during the online registration process (PREFERRED) or sending the pictures by mail with your signed Online Confirmation or Letter of Registration Intent provided at the end of the online registration process if submitting online but not through the FAST TRACK registration option.

OR

If you are a current member you may also use the Member Gallery to upload your pictures. All Member Gallery pictures will be available for public viewing. The Member Gallery option is only available to APBR members who also currently have a profile set up with our PitBullSocial network service.

If not submitting your registration online you may also submit your pictures to the email address listed on the printable Registration Form or send hard copy photos with the signed Registration Form by mail to us at:

American PitBull Registry ( APBR )
PO Box 1036
Antioch, TN, 37011.

All hard copy photos sent by mail will be returned with the Pits Registration Material or if the dog is determined not to be a pure bred PitBull the photos will be returned along with your registration fee minus a $5 administrative processing charge.

5.What payment options are available?

There are six primary methods of payment that we accept, which are mailed money order, mailed cash, online check, debit card, credit card and PayPal. Please review question #2.

6.What do I receive as an APBR member?

Unlimited support to meet your needs as a pure bred PitBull owner. The American PitBull Registry ( APBR ) is a member-driven registry and is constantly working on improving and adding to it's member services and benefits. The APBR’s goals are to foster a family-type atmosphere between those who share caring for the PitBull as a common characteristic.

Because we are driven by our membership our members are not just a number. We do not provide just "papers" - we provide you and your PitBull Family a unique identity and spend considerable efforts in supporting the needs of our membership and the organic PitBull community. We listen to what our members needs are, take these expressed needs with the highest level of seriousness, and constantly adjust our services and benefits based on member input.

To see a benefit comparison chart between the APBR and other well know registries click here. A more comprehensive list of APBR benefits and services is also available here.

When any genealogical information can be provided we will create a visually enhanced pedigree for you for up to seven generations FREE of charge as well as include this information through your Personalized Family Profile disc where even greater levels of Pit Family relationships can be defined such as siblings, mates and fractional relations.

The APBR maintains a proprietary genealogical tracking service that is the most advanced in the Registration Industry. With this use of the personalized Family Profile disc we provide, all related Family members automatically receive indefinite free updates as their Family expands and grows. Updates allow Family members to track the growth of their "Family" and take pride in its development. At the APBR we feel that pride is obtained not with just past genealogical data but with a comprehensive "Family" relation genealogical model allowing members to have a full and dynamic perspective of their individual PitBull Family Profile and all known and documented relatives.

7.What if I provide PitBull or animal generic products or services how can the APBR help me improve my exposure?

Because we feel all issues of the PitBull are tied together in relation around the Pit we offer several services to assist others who also deal with PitBulls in their products and services. The primary way we can assist your business is by the exchanging of a link. The link you provide will be placed in the form of a banner (728 X 90 pixels) on our PitBullSocial network.

Before links are exchanged we will review all such sites to make sure the site does not promote questionable activities in regards to the PitBull or any other dog breed.

For commercial business we charge a small maintenance fee for inclusion. For information on inclusion please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to provide greater details. Our www.PitBullSocial.com network is exclusive to Pit or pet related businesses. Our service site at: www.PitBullResourceNetwork.com is open for general advertising. All banners and material are subject to our moral review and will only be included if they can be considered appropriate for Family viewing.

For non-profits we place banners free through our PitBull Resource Network, which also allows them to set up their very own account and even use such as their primary web presence. This is FREE to Pit Bull Friendly pet related organizations and individuals alike. FREE banner placements are however exclusive to organizations.

We will then give potential sites a moral review and if we do not think it proper for viewing by an entire family will decline such links. Please do not waste our time with non-Pit/pet related requests or requests that would not reflect our goals and / or ethics. Stretch the relationship if you need and clean up your site if you have to.

In the review of all sites we also consider the site's benefit from a development standpoint and make suggestions on methods that could be used to improve your sites Web performance. These are often direct recommendations that we have had experience with in improving site visibility in various search engines such as Google and Yahoo.

Recommendations are free of charge and are intended to promote the positives of the PitBull breed and its ownership and how it directly relates to your business.

If you are a kennel and a member of the APBR and appropriately certified as such through us please read question #9 on PitBull kennel site linking.

The American PitBull Registry ( APBR ) receives over 10+ Million hits each month. We are happy to help others in the PitBull and pet generic community realize benefits from the exposure we can provide them with the opportunity at receiving. The APBR is considered prime Internet real estate and ranks in the top 1% of all sites on the Web.

If you would like to include your business listing please send us a letter describing your business as well as a link to its Web site to us at:

8.How can I have a link to my Web site added if I am not an APBR Certified Kennel?

If you are not a kennel but are a pet related service simply request the link by sending a message to us through our www.PitBullSocial.com profile account. Make sure you do not promote questionable PitBull activities as such requests will be turned down. We require that you also reciprocate this courtesy and place a link to the American PitBull Registry ( APBR ) on your Web site that would offer appropriate exposure to our services. If desired we would be happy to review sites and make link placement suggestions. If a reciprocal link is not possible then we require the payment of a modest sponsorship fee for placement.

9.Can I list my Kennel with the APBR?

Yes. And it’s FREE. We would love to have your Kennel listed with the American PitBull Registry ( APBR ) as long as it meets our high level of ethics and you are an APBR member or currently signing up as one.

In order to place a kennel listing we have two requirements.

  • And a Kennel Certification Contract must be completed and signed. This Kennel Certification Contract states that as a Kennel you will operate in a responsible way and be honest in all transactions regarding the development, breeding and transfer of PitBulls.

10.What if I want a link to my Kennel service?

If you are a Certified APBR Kennel member simply request a link and provide us your URL using our www.PitBullSocial.com services you can use its message system to make such requests. For such kennel listings we require a 728 X 90 pixel banner.

All banners will be sized appropriately based on how we feel will best fit the format of our Web sites. In return, we also require that APBR Certified Kennels reciprocate this generosity and place a link to our Web site from theirs as well.

14.Can I sell my Pits through the APBR?

There are several options provided to members who wish to sell their PitBull(s). This being said, it is important to realize that as a Pit ages (as with any other breed) financial value drops unless held at or improved upon based on particular characteristics which some may hold value in, such as rank, color, accommodations, desired genetic traits, recognitions, etc.

For APBR members who have puppies to sell we offer FREE assistance in finding good homes for these pups. We allow our members to place unlimited FREE ads through our APBR PitBull Classifieds. This is a dedicated service that each member can use for their purposes to place UNLIMITED FREE ADS. Kennels who participate in our Kennel Certification Program have additional marketing benefits as well provided them.

If you have an adult Pit and you need to find a new home for, we offer free re-homing services to help insure that your Pit finds a new, loving and quality home. This is a service we provide as a FREE benefit to the PitBull Community through our PitBull Resource Network.

It is essential to understand that if you turn your PitBull over to a humane society, shelter, pound, or other animal advocacy organization (especially PETA) IT IS LIKELY that they will be euthanized, humanely if lucky. The fact is, in many parts of the United States such organizations ARE NOT PIT BULL FRIENDLY and do not even offer such turn-ins the opportunity for re-homing. Some may say they do but for only a limited time. If considering turning your PitBull over ASK QUESTIONS and if possible avoid such by placing a free re homing as through our PitBull Resource Network where ads for such re-homes can be placed FREE.

If considering turning your PitBull over to a humane organization you should work to do so at a NO-KILL facility.

Some organizations even sell pets to medical research projects similar to those promoted in Ontario Canada. These unlucky pets are sold for as little as $6 each and placed in some of the most tormented situations imaginable including LIVE radioactive studies and dissection.

15.Does The American PitBull Registry sell PitBulls?

No. We do however assist our members in doing so. If interested in buying a PitBull puppy or puppies, please check our APBR PitBull Classifieds section.

If it does not matter to you whether or not your purchase of a new Pit is a puppy, we like to encourage adoption as an alternative to purchase. Thousands of Pits die every year needlessly that if only given the chance would make wonderful loving pets. Unfortunately due to Breed Specific Laws (BSL) and policies based on ignorance, thousands and thousands of pure bred PitBulls are not even given the opportunity for adoption, or their opportunities are just not long enough. If adoption is a considerable option please check out our PitBull Resource Network and APBR PitBull Classifieds for more information.

For many American PitBull Terriers ( APBT ) that do have the chance to find a new and loving home, the lives of both the PitBull and their new owners are enriched beyond all expectations. Typically there are minor costs involved in adopting a pure bred PitBull from a Pit friendly rescue or shelter but they tend to be less than standard purchase costs. These costs vary around the world and from town to town. Most Pits acquired through these services are sexually altered and are up to date on all vaccination so this may be additional incentive as well.

If you would like to assist individuals in re-homing their Pit, we suggest the review of our PitBull Resource Network section where Pits may be added by shelters, rescues and individuals. Through this service you can additionally sign up for various volunteer opportunities such as becoming a foster home provider.

16.How do I get involved in the Foster Care program?

Join our PitBull Resource Network where you will have the opportunity to help both American Terriers ( APBT ) and local Pit friendly organizations.

We are constantly working to add to our list of Foster Care providers. Foster Care services allow Pits to be placed in an intermediate home until a new permanent home can be found. Such intermediate homes may be either short term or long term in nature. Becoming a Foster Care provider is highly rewarding but can be a heartbreaking process at the same time one a Pit has found its new home.

Fostering PitBulls is a wonderful method of having and maintaining the "PitBull experience." Fostering Pits allows someone to know they are making a positive difference in the PitBull breed and image. Fostering allows one to help as many Pits as possible. Fostering a PitBull which has become part of a loving bond with you and then placing it into another home does leave one with a bit of sadness. However, the joy of knowing that the new home was properly screened and that this Pit will have a proper and loving home, and that you can continue this service for many others if you so choose, is very joyous and satisfying. Being able to maintain contact with the new owners and to see how their lives, as well as the life of the Pit they have adopted, has been enriched is indescribably fulfilling.

17.What if I want to adopt a PitBull?

Join our PitBull Resource Network where you will have the opportunity to help both PitBulls and local Pit friendly organizations. Through this network you will be provided with the opportunity to find a PitBull that meets your desires while at the same time knowing you are making the difference in the life of a PitBull that may otherwise face an impending death sentence.

18.I am interested in developing a PitBull Rescue but do not know where to begin. Can you help?

Yes. Because we have realized the desperation of the breed we have and continue to be the only registry that works to create new and innovative techniques to improving the breeds survival rate.

Many are under the misperception that they cannot be a rescue because they cannot house many Pits. The fact is, a rescue may choose not to house any Pits at all but instead focus on transportation needs or use and recruit local PitBull Foster Providers. If considering developing a rescue program we can help you mold and develop a rescue program around your needs, desires, and abilities.

If you are interested in developing a rescue please join our PitBull Resource Network service where you can begin developing an online identity for your new rescue that we can also help market.

For additional information please feel free to send us your information by mail including what your intentions are, resources, needs and other pertinent information and we will be happy to help.

19.Does the APBR register Pits, which have been adopted?

Yes.

In order to prove such adoptions we request proof from the adopting organization or vet statement so we may accurately denote such in our databases. All adoptions should be proven when possible. We have an explicit policy of not discriminating against adopted PitBull owners and feel all pure bred PitBull owners should be able to take part in PitBull related activities and to benefit from the many services we offer.

20.My Pit has been sexually altered can you register him / her?

Yes. Unlike most registries, we feel that ALL PitBulls should have full privileges of membership. We have an explicit policy of not discriminating against surgically altered PitBulls and feel ALL pure bred PitBull owners should be able to benefit from the many services we offer. We ask that when you consider ANY surgical alterations that you do so with careful and informed insight. To learn more on sexual alteration you may visit our Health section where an article on this and several other topics are provided.

21.Is my adopted and/or sexually altered Pit discriminated against in the services made available to it?

The American PitBull Registry ( APBR ) does not discriminate in any of our services to members whether the Pit has been sexually altered, adopted or not.

22.What if my American PitBull Terrier ( APBT ) becomes lost or stolen?

The PitBull breed is a very athletic, cunning and smart breed of dog. As with all breeds we encourage PitBull owners to make sure to maintain an environment that will keep them properly confined. Proper confinement of pets to one's own property is one of the foundations of responsible ownership. Proper confinement is the number one preventative measure in making sure one's PitBull is not lost or stolen.

If you are a member of the American PitBull Registry you have access to our APBR PitBull Classifieds where you may place an ad with picture of your Pit if it does become lost or stolen. This is a FREE service to all APBR Members.

Also APBR members can use our locator cross-ID tracking system, which is the most advanced ID tracking system in existence and can be used to track Pits registered with us that also use other ID systems such as tattoos, microchips, etc. This is locator ID cross tracking comes FREE to APBR members.

On occasion a lost PitBull is lucky enough to be found and reported by one of our APBR members. In many cases this PitBull is not in the best physical or mental condition and vet charges are incurred. When our members provide us such information we also allow FREE posting in our APBR PitBull Classifieds of these Pits in an attempt to find the Pit's original owner(s). When this occurs, our members will have the right to preview the environmental conditions of the original owner and make a determination as to whether or not the PitBull should be returned. If the environment is not conducive to the best interest of the Pit or if the individual determines that the owner is not responsible in their ownership or care such returns are discouraged.

Another condition of return may also be that the proper compensation be given to offset the care charges of our members unless otherwise agreed upon by the member and original owner(s).

23.Can the APBR help me re-home my Pit or another Pit in need?

The American PitBull Registry has recognized the need to assist individuals who need to re-home a needy PitBull. This is handled through our PitBull Resource Network as well as our APBR PitBull Classifieds for APBR members where ads can be placed free.

24.What if I am an organization, which has or comes across Pits in need of assistance through re-homing, transport, or other activity?

You are a valuable resource and we can assist you in your Pit friendly efforts.

In order to take advantage of the FREE services we offer to you, you may set up an account with our PitBull Resource Network.

The condition we have to using our services is that the PitBull be pure bred in nature. We limit such inclusion due to nature of discrimination often placed on the PitBull breed and lack of resources it has dedicated to it. There are many other services (Petfinder.com, Pets911.com, AdoptAPet.com, etc.) that serves other pets so if the pure bred condition is unable to be met we encourage you to use one of these so we may save our resources for the pure bred PitBull specifically.

25.How can I submit material for APBR News Feeds, blogs and forums?

APBR members can be active in our PitBullSocial network and write blogs and forums freely that are also backed up with our RSS feed services so others can also freely subscribe and receive free updates.

We allow our Members to also submit suggestions and requests via their Member Express Contact Form located through their personalized Family Profile Disc provided with initial registration. If you are not a member you may send such material to us by mail for consideration at:

If your interest is more on PitBull assistance services then a FREE account with our www.PitBullResourceNetwork.com is more appropriate for you.

Limited accounts are FREE to all. Posting and other advanced services on PitBullSocial are reserved for official members. In order to receive an RSS feed you may need to have access to an RSS Feed Reader. You may download a reader here. Some web browsers such as Internet Explorer 7 have these built in. Also if you have an account through PitBullSocial or PitBull Resource Network you may receive feeds through these account services free without the need to download a reader of your own.

27.How do I make suggestions that I think would improve or expand upon the level of services the APBR provides?

28.How long does the registration process take?

Individual PitBull registrations typically take in the realm of 6 - 10 weeks (+/-) based on our current work loads. Please allow for this before contacting us about submitted material. Please be assured if you follow the correct registration process and provide ALL the necessary material your registration will be handled in as timely as manner as possible. The less time we spend on answering questions about submitted material the more time we spend registering PitBulls and in a faster fashion, therefore benefiting all involved. We do invite and encourage such requests after the 10 week limit but do ask you be patient during this period.

Litter registrations and Family Discount Program registrations are a top priority at the American PitBull Registry ( APBR ). These are processed in 2-4 weeks typically. If you have taken advantage of one of these programs and it has passed the 3 week mark we encourage your requests on their progress. We understand the importance of such submissions and the critical nature and timing they have in regards to the breeding APBR member/prospective member and the new pup owners. When submitting using these options it is highly encouraged that you carefully review the time it may take for Litter Registration Material to return to you.

We try to be as fair as possible in the registration process to members and prospective members of the American PitBull Registry ( APBR ) while taking into account very specific and immediate needs in an organic and diverse PitBull community. Expediting registrations is not typical as we view it as your responsibility to fully understand what is needed to join the APBR as a member and what time frames you can reasonably expect such in. Please read all instructions carefully during the registration process.

What about next day air? Offering this option would lead to the illusion that the level of services we develop and make available to our members can be so expeditiously developed and provided in a day. Unlike others we do not wish to misrepresent our services in this way.

We cater our product to our individual members and program new APBR Members a personalized Family Profile disc with their registration material. This disc is personalized specifically to submitting individuals and their Family of APBR registered Pits and allows for greater interactivity with other direct Family Members.

Others registries typically provide 'papers' through an assembly line method that does not take into account your individuality and personal needs.

At the APBR we develop and provide an umbrella of programs, resources, services and opportunities to wrap around our members needs to help give our members an "Ongoing Positive Experience" and support as pure bred PitBull dog owners. We are a registry for the pure bred American PitBull Terrier ( APBT ) owner who wishes for more than just 'papers'.

Being a recognized APBR member requires a long-term personal commitment to working at promoting the positives of the PitBull and doing so in a responsible fashion.

29.Can I expedite the registration process?

What about next day air? Offering this option would lead to the illusion that the level of services we develop and make available to our members can be so expeditiously developed and provided in a day. Unlike others we do not wish to misrepresent our services in this way.

One such catered product that only the American PitBull Registry ( APBR ) offers is our personalized Family Profile disc that provides considerable amounts of information for the new APBR member and access points to take advantage of the many benefits they have as members such as access to our proprietary genealogical Family Profile tracking program, which is the most advanced in the entire Registration industry, FREE APBR PitBull Classifieds posting, Member Gallery, APBR RSS News Feed, etc.

Others registries typically only provide 'papers' through an assembly line method that does not take into account your individuality and personal needs.

At the APBR we develop and cater an umbrella of programs, resources, services and opportunities to wrap around our members needs to help give our members an "Ongoing Positive Experience" and support as pure bred PitBull dog owners. We are a registry for the pure bred American PitBull Terrier ( APBT ) owner who wishes for more than just 'papers'.

Being a recognized APBR member requires a long-term personal commitment to working at promoting the positives of the PitBull and doing so in a responsible fashion.

30.Can you guarantee my PitBull is pure?

The truth is NO REGISTRY can guarantee purity regardless of the amount of backup paperwork. By requiring our potential members to submit pictures before the registration process is completed, we can provide our professional opinion as to purity and reduce the level of fraud and mistakes in the registration process.

All registries the APBR included depend on the honesty, integrity and ethics of its members and prospective membership. Any registry that says they can guarantee purity are simply lying.

Through the use of our proprietary Family Profile genealogical tracking program and image cross analysis we do however maintain the leading system of security in the Registration Industry, which is much less likely to be false in nature than other registries as their is no reward in doing so. Additionally unlike other registries our services are open for constant review and self-policed by thousands of members on a regular basis. Due to the independent nature in which we handle each Pit registered with the APBR false representation is much more easily perceivable and eliminated.

If someone is found to be acting in a dishonest way through our registration process we immediately ban them for life from future participation, disqualifying the registration of the non-pure Pit, and suspend the registration of all other Pits owned by that individual until all such are re-homed. Dishonesty in our membership is one of the most egregious violations of our protocols and subject to serious sanction including up to criminal and civil litigation.

31.What if I have my Pit genetically tested can its purity be determined?

There is a common misperception perpetuated by many registries that a genetic test can prove the purity of a dog breed. Many such registries make considerable financial gain from the promotion of this myth and the selling or endorsement of such related products. The truth is, genetic testing IS NOT able to determine purity of a breed.

Genetic tests can only be used to validate parentage, sex and various genetic illnesses and traits such as coat and nose color. For some this holds a value, for some others however, it does not. If considering having a genetic test run on your dog, we encourage you to use a reputable provider, educate yourself and understand the process, and read the fine print. By doing this you can better make an informed judgment as to whether or not this process has value and is right for you.

If interested and you are an APBR member let us know and we can help arrange a discount with a 3rd party non-bias service provider.

If you do decide to have such tests conducted and are an APBR member we are happy to bank the results FREE.

33. Are PitBulls good with children?

In order to be fair in answering this question one must ask is the child good with Pits. IF a child does not respect an animal regardless of type and if the child's parents and guardians are unwilling to teach respect one cannot be surprised if an animal turns and attacks regardless of breed. This is not the fault of the animal but of the child and parents. Self-defense is a self preservation mechanism present in all animals (including humans). The majority of attacks by animals are a result not of unstable animals but disrespectful children and irresponsible parents, guardians, and pet owners.

To have a better understanding of dog attacks in relation to children we can not recommend enough, reading the book by Karen Delise "Fatal Dog Attacks". This book is probably the most insightful book available in regards to the "Why" of dog attacks and to date is the most comprehensive research of its kind.

Having said this given that a parent or guardian is responsible, a child is respectful, and the Pit to be acquired is healthy, mentally stable, and well socialized it is more often than not a wonderful family addition and companion. Although the media has sought to unfairly stigmatize this wonderful and trustworthy breed the truth is that the PitBull has been bred for hundreds of years to be EXCEPTIONALLY people friendly and regularly rate near the top of all breeds (200+) tested by the American Temperament Test Society

To understand the bias of media and how it places an unfair stigma on the American pit Bull Terrier we also advise Karen Delise's other insightful book: "The Pit Bull Placebo: The Media, Myths and Politics of Canine Aggression".

Some interesting statistics to help put dog attacks in perspective:

  • Every year more people die from cattle attacks than by dogs (all breeds combined), mountain lions, and bears combined.
  • 1992 - 1997 there were 114 people killed by cattle and only 87 by dogs. When one then compares the low number of cattle in relation to the high number of dogs this differential is even more enlightening.
  • The majority of fatal attacks are a defensive response a dog has to being abused, teased, disrespected, or the irresponsible trespass of children onto the dogs area of proper confinement.
  • Infants are 25 times more likely to die in their own crib due to its lack of proper maintenance.
  • Infants are 125 times more likely to be killed by their own parents than by all dog breeds combined.
  • The domestic short-haired cat is responsible for more serious injuries every year than all dog breeds combined.

The truth about dogs is they are as safe as their owners and the people around them. The best defense to a dog attack is proper socialization and training.

34.If I am purchasing a PitBull already registered with the APBR how do I have it transferred into my name?

If the Pit is a Litter Registered pup then on the back of its Registration Certificate there is a Litter Pup Transfer Form that should be filled out and sent in according to the provided instructions.

If you are purchasing an adult PitBull already registered with the APBR then all you need do is request the owner to print off an Owner Transfer Form and complete and send it in. This form is provided through the Member Express section available through the Family Profile disc provided with initial registration.

One of the benefits of being a new or existing APBR Member is that such transfers are completed FREE of charge to either the buying or selling party.
