Merle is a genetic trait that effects all colors and patterns. While it is know to be genetically related a specific test has yet to be developed to accurately test for it. Much speculation has been made about its genetic basis such as it being a dominant gene but such speculation has proven to be wrong. The truth is, is that it genetically represents itself in many different ways and can remain hidden for multiple generations. The Merle PitBull has undeniably been the most controversial lines in recent history with the next closest being blue and the & tan lines. Misinformation and ignorance perpetuate much of this controversy. It is true that it is hard to get accurate information on Merle PitBulls and the majority of what is said is done by a select few bias individuals who wish to eliminate merle lines through the use of lies and manipulation.

The truth about Merles is they were included in the first original written standard on the American PitBull Terrier which states: "Any color, solid, parti, or patched is permissible". We take serious this standard and feel there is no ambiguity with the term "ANY". While many will lie and say that the PitBull is not pure to the breed it has been historically documented as such and examples have been shown to have been owned by many of the most well known individuals in the breeds history including John Colby who helped establish the very first breed standard.
Some popular myths that surround the Merle lines are that they are not pure, they are not standard and they have health issues. All of these have been proven false. While understanding the line is important when considering breeding when done so in a proper and responsible manner there has been no proven increase in any health related issues that are beyond that of any other line.
So most people will either fall on the side of love or on the side of disgust. They either think the Merle PitBull is the most beautiful and unique of PitBulls or the ugliest. At the American PitBull Registry ( APBR ) we love all Pits and will strive to insure the legacy of all lines are represented and preserved in history. So red Merle, blue Merle, my Merle, your Merle it is up to you to decide if the Merle PitBull is right for you. No one forces anyone to own one nor should they feel they have the place to take this right from anyone else.
